It’s the biggest tournament in sports. You may have already known much about the World Cup, but now it is in English.
In the past two weeks, 32 teams and more than 700 players have competed in venues all around Brazil. Now only eight of the teams remain for the quarter-finals.

SINCE the World Cup changed to 32 teams in 1998, this is the first time that the eight group winners have all progressed to the quarter-finals at the same tournament. In 2010, the USA, winning Group C ahead of England, lost their last match to Ghana in extra time.
THE French team have insisted that all bars of soap in their hotel should be replaced with liquid so that they don’t slip and injure themselves.
HOLLAND’S Nigel de Jong injured his groin in the match against Mexico. He tweeted: ‘Devastated about my injury. Sadly enough this is part of the sport as well. Playing or not playing, injured or not injured, I will stick with the group because we all came here with a mission.’
